Annabelle is a young woman emigrating from Hungary to the United States in the 1890s with her young daughter, Paula.

On the ship, she meets a young man, Alfredo, who befriends her and manages to protect her through the crisis she faces during the crossing, guiding her during her introduction to the United States through Ellis Island.

Though life takes each of these young people on different paths, they manage to reconnect after overcoming unbelievable obstacles. Alfredo has to deal with his parents’ pre-arranged marriage to Lucia. Though Alfredo and Lucia have difficulties in relating to each other, the pre-ordained marriage takes place. But fate has other ideas for Alfredo’s life and he is faced with decisions he never thought he would have to make.

Annabelle, who thought that Franz, the father of her child, Paula, would be providing financially for them and joining them in the future, now has to face the facts of her existence. She is indeed alone, but with the help of her grandparents she manages to find another opportunity for her future in the person of Miklos, a young man that she had known in Hungary. When that prospect dissolves into conflict, Annabelle is at her “wits’ end”.

Somehow, the future unfolds for her and Alfredo, in spite of threats, attacks, and lack of any support from New York public authorities.

In the end the family comes together to offer what they think is the solution to the problems.

What happens next is intriguing and all-consuming for both Annabelle and Alfredo.

After securing a Bachelor of Science in Education degree with honors from Fordham University, Charlotte began her career as a high school teacher of English in New Jersey’s public school system. She later moved into the corporate world and worked in Human Resources until she retired. During this time, for a period of five years, she functioned as an adjunct professor in the Graduate Human Resources Department of Villa Nova University, Radnor, PA.

Community service has always been an integral part of Charlotte’s professional life. As a member of Rotary, she served on the Governor’s Committee, formed a Literacy Program, and founded a Blood Drive for the North Jersey Blood Center that collected 350 pints of blood in 3 days, supported a Polish child for open heart surgery and led numerous other fund-raising activities. Today she makes Angel Gowns (for babies that die at birth) from discarded wedding gowns and supplies the ICU units of hospitals with caps for premature babies…and she is still a Rotarian.

She is a writer at heart. She has had managerial articles published, and has been featured in an article. She writes a blog (, has self-published a children’s book (We Have A New Baby At Our House) and has completed her first novel, an immigration story (New Beginnings: Annabelle’s Story). She resides with her husband in Pennsylvania.
