ABOUT THE BOOK
1968: Frankie Saunders has finally found the courage to leave her mean, abusive husband. To do so, she has to rely on her unreliable aunt, Daisy Washington. Daisy drinks, smokes, and drives her Ford Mustang too fast. But fate as brought the two of them together on the two thousand mile trip to California
1928: Daisy Washington is ready to take on the world, inspired by the work of the NAACP and W.E.B. DuBois. The first to go to university in her family, she left her journalism job to help care for her younger siblings when her mother fell ill. But when her father takes in the Porter family as paying boarders, Daisy sees herself getting stuck in a world she longed to escape--and drawn to the Porters son, Isaiah.
With lives touched by violence and triumph, Daisy and Frankie learn they have far more in common than their outward personalities would imply. But when the truth of Daisy's goals in returning to California come to light, it may cause more upheaval than either can bear.
