ABOUT THE BOOK
THE MERMAID (G.P. Putnam’s Sons) is a striking, underwater version of Goldilocks and the Three Bears as only Brett could create starring a mermaid and three octopuses. Brett is famous for taking extensive research trips to all corners of the globe for her books and including special cultural flourishes in her highly detailed art. THE MERMAID took her to the reefs off the coast of Okinawa, Japan, and she describes her experience much like Alice going down the rabbit hole to find another world. Later, during a “tentacles-on” experience at the New England Aquarium’s Giant Pacific Octopus Exhibit, Brett was astounded by their intelligence and curiosity for human interaction. Brett’s love of nature and strong support of conservation is strongly reflected in her work.
In THE MERMAID, when Kiniro, a young mermaid, comes upon a gorgeous house made of seashells and coral and she is so curious that she goes inside. But when the Octopus family returns home, they are not happy to find someone has been eating their food and breaking their things. Luckily, shock turns to happiness when Kiniro gives the baby octopus a thoughtful gift before escaping from the twenty-four arms coming her way.
